Andy and his family are driving home to Paterson, New Jersey, after a week in the Adirondacks. He looks forward to leaving the holidays behind and relaxing with his three dogs. Instead, they return to a very worried dog-sitter and one extra canine guest.

The sitter brought the stray straight to Andy, knowing he would help. Andy immediately recognizes the dog as Murphy, whom he and his wife once fostered before placing him with BJ Bremer and BJ’s mother. BJ had been so eager to learn how to care for Murphy that Andy took to him right away.

When Andy heads over to reunite Murphy with the Bremers, he finds BJ’s mother in tears: Murphy bolted after BJ was arrested for murder. BJ stands accused of killing one of his college professors. Andy had hoped for a peaceful post-Christmas stretch, yet his fondness for BJ—and the fact that his golden retriever Tara adores Murphy—pulls him into the case.
